Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Dark Forest' is a sport of a seedling of unknown parentage, notable for the exceptionally crisp contrast between its dark green leaf centers and creamy white, heavily rippled margins. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 8 inches long by 6 inches wide, feature six vein pairs and a very shiny upper surface with a slightly shiny underside, exhibiting light cupping, moderate twisting, light waviness, and light corrugation.
In the Garden
This medium-sized cultivar forms a mound 18 inches high and 30 inches in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the rich green center and white variegation remain most vivid. The compact, mound-like habit suits border fronts, shade gardens, and woodland settings; its moderate size also makes it appropriate for container culture. Companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials with contrasting foliage textures.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
