Overview
Registered in 1998 by R. Snyder, this large blue-green hosta forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 56 inches (142.2 cm) in diameter and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height. Its most distinctive features are the medium blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a dull upper surface, and a slightly shiny underside, borne on scapes 18 to 24 inches (45.7 to 61.0 cm) tall.
In the Garden
'Dale's Blue Gray' performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, where its blue-green foliage retains its color. At mature size, it functions as a substantial specimen or background plant in shaded borders, with leaves 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, cordate leaves.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
