Overview
Registered in 1988 by E. Smith and the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society, 'Curlew' is a small hosta derived from the *H.* Tardiana Group. Its distinctive blue-green leaves, each bearing nine vein pairs and a narrow, lighter margin, form a compact, dense mound.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of 21 inches (53.3 cm) and height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), 'Curlew' is well-suited for the front of a border, rock garden, or container. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its color. The relatively low scape, reaching up to 22 inches (55.9 cm), carries pale lavender flowers in midsummer. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and small *Carex* species.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
