Overview
Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Crumples' is a small, variegated cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. sieboldiana*. Its most distinctive feature is the heavy, rippled texture of the leaf margins, which gives the foliage a crumpled or puckered appearance, contrasting with the medium green leaf centers.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is best suited to partial to full shade, where its textured leaves and grayish-green scapes (20 to 24 inches, or 50.8 to 61.0 cm tall) can be appreciated. Its small size makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, woodland edges, or the front of shaded borders, and it pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. It is also suitable for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed.
