Overview
Registered in 1988 by Walters Gardens, Inc., 'Crowned Imperial' is a medium-sized sport distinguished by its dark green leaves with pure white margins and a slightly white underside. The foliage measures 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) in length and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in width, with ten pairs of veins, and the plant forms a clump 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its white margins remain crisp and the green center retains its depth. At maturity, it forms a substantial mound suitable for mid-border placement or as a specimen in shaded beds. Its scapes, reaching 44 to 50 inches (111.8 to 127.0 cm) in height, rise well above the foliage. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or shade-tolerant grasses complement its broad leaves.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Crowned Imperial' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing; appropriate controls should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
