Overview
Registered in 2001 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Crocodile Smile' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its unusual leaf coloration: a creamy white center bordered by a dark green, serrated margin. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide with 11 vein pairs, exhibit a slightly shiny surface on both sides and a lightly wavy texture.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. The light lavender scapes rise 14 to 16 inches (35.6 to 40.6 cm) above the foliage in midsummer. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its compact size allows for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
