Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Country Gentleman' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by medium green leaves with creamy white to creamy yellow margins of variable width (0.6 to 5.1 cm). The broadly ovate, lightly cupped leaves are slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with 17 to 19 vein pairs and a cordate base. The cultivar was named in honor of Fred Wilson, known to the registrant as "Herb."
In the Garden
'Country Gentleman' forms a substantial mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade with consistent moisture, typical of most hostas. The large, variegated leaves provide strong textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its size makes it suitable as a specimen or mid-border accent.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and may benefit from preventive measures in damp conditions.
