Overview

Registered in 2006, 'Cosmic Brother' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of medium green leaf centers with pale yellow margins of variable width, ranging from 0.25 to 1 inch (0.6 to 2.5 cm), creating a broad, flat border that contrasts with the dull-surfaced, broadly ovate foliage.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial mound reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, rounded leaves with 14 to 16 vein pairs provide textural contrast when paired with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or astilbes. The scapes rise 36 to 40 inches (91.4 to 101.6 cm) above the foliage, bearing typical lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
