Overview
Registered in 2012 with parentage unknown, 'Conundrum' is a giant hosta distinguished by its exceptionally large, broadly ovate blue-green leaves with cordate bases and slightly rippled margins. The leaves bear a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and are held on long, strong, erect petioles, forming a substantial mound.
In the Garden
'Conundrum' reaches 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It is best sited in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its glaucous quality. The large scale makes it suitable as a specimen or focal point in woodland borders and shade gardens; it pairs well with ferns, brunnera, and other broad-leaved perennials. Its size precludes container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves show moderate slug resistance, though protection may be needed in damp conditions. Deer may browse young foliage.
