Overview

Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Compass Point' is a large, upright cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its dark green leaves with white margins, serrated edges, and unstable streaks of yellow and creamy white. The leaf surface is very shiny on both sides, and the strong color contrast combined with the serrated leaf margins gives this hosta a notably crisp, textured appearance.

In the Garden

'Compass Point' reaches a mature spread of approximately 36 inches (91 cm) and a height of 18 inches (46 cm), with scapes rising 15 to 20 inches (38 to 51 cm). Its upright, slow-growing habit makes it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade, where the variegation and serrated leaf edges are most visible. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size precludes container cultivation except in very large pots.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges; typical hosta-growing zones apply. The thick, shiny leaves provide moderate slug resistance, but standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary in areas with high pest pressure.
