Overview

Registered in 2015 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Emerald Tiara', 'Compadre' is a small, fast-growing cultivar distinguished by its greenish-yellow leaf centers framed by unusually wide, dark green margins. The leaves are broadly ovate with rounded bases, slightly shiny on both surfaces, and develop a slight rippled edge at maturity.

In the Garden

'Compadre' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its gold-centered leaves maintain good color contrast. The compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings; companion plants with contrasting foliage, such as ferns or small sedges, complement its mound form.

Care Notes

Water regularly to establish and during dry periods, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Compadre' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be needed in areas where these pests are prevalent.
