Overview

Registered in 2007 by E. Schulz, this small hosta cultivar is a seedling of *Hosta* 'My Darling' with unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinguished by its light green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a compact mound-like habit, and the development of intense red speckling on petioles and leaf stalks as the season progresses.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Clementine' forms a dense mound 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited to small gardens, rockeries, or container plantings due to its small size. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials that complement its variegated foliage.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may feed on hostas, 'Clementine' has no known exceptional resistance; standard protective measures may be required in areas with heavy pest pressure.
