Overview

Registered in 2007, 'Clear Fork River Valley' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Puckered Giant' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Woodland Blue' (pollen parent). It is visually distinguished by its intensely corrugated, nearly round leaves that are a deep, dark blue-green with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and by the highly humped puckering between the 15 to 18 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a large, mound-like clump reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 56 inches (142.2 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its giant size precludes container cultivation for most gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large, textured leaves may attract both pests.
