Overview

Registered in 1996, 'Circle of Light' is a small hosta cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with pure white margins. The leaves measure 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, with 5 to 7 vein pairs and a slightly rippled, 0.25-inch (0.6 cm) white margin. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the leaf base is rounded.

In the Garden

This compact, mound-forming plant reaches 7 inches (17.8 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white margins remain crisp and the blue-green centers hold their color. Suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging, it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials. Its small size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Circle of Light' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent. The scape reaches 24 to 30 inches (61.0 to 76.2 cm) in height, bearing lavender flowers typical of the genus.
