Overview
Registered in 2014 by J. Schwarz, *Hosta* 'Chris' is a large, upright cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with golden yellow margins and prominent veining. The broadly ovate, cordate-based leaves measure 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, feature 14 vein pairs, and display a dull upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath, accompanied by lightly wavy, lightly corrugated margins.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature spread of 39 inches (99.1 cm) and height of 23 inches (58.4 cm), 'Chris' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage and gold margins hold color well. Its moderate growth rate and upright habit make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shade gardens, pairing effectively with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials. The large seed pods add late-season interest.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as foliage is susceptible to damage from both pests.
