Overview
Registered in 2007 by B. & D. Stegeman and introduced by V. Wade, *Hosta* 'Chief White Cloud' is a large, mound-forming cultivar notable for its blue-green leaves with heavy rippled margins and an exceptional white underside. The foliage emerges from the cross of *H.* 'High Noon' and *H.* 'Big John' (pod parent) with *H. pycnophylla* (pollen parent), yielding a plant with a glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces and a nearly round, cordate-based leaf shape.
In the Garden
'Chief White Cloud' reaches 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, forming a dense mound with moderate growth. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, wavy foliage. The green scapes rise 42 to 48 inches (106.7 to 121.9 cm) above the mound, bearing flowers in mid to late summer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, avoiding waterlogged soil, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad leaves are susceptible to damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
