Overview
Registered in 1989 by the Chelsea Physic Garden, 'Chelsea Ore' is a small hosta cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with gold margins. The foliage measures 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with six vein pairs, and exhibits a yellow-green to dark green coloration with the gold edge.
In the Garden
This compact, semi-stoloniferous plant reaches 24 inches (61.0 cm) in both height and diameter at maturity, making it suitable for small spaces or the front of a border. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for gold-margined hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials. Its modest size also makes it a candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Chelsea Ore' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
