Year registered2011
Section classIII-4b

Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Lakeside Looking Glass', 'Charity' was registered in 2011 and is visually distinguished by its dark green leaf centers framed by broad, cream-colored margins. The leaves are broadly ovate with rounded bases and slightly rippled edges, measuring approximately 19 cm in length and 13 cm in width, with margins 1.9 to 2.5 cm wide. The upper leaf surface is slightly shiny, as is the underside.

In the Garden

'Charity' forms a medium-sized, mound-like clump with a moderate growth rate, suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its bold variegation provides contrast when planted near solid-green or gold-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. The plant’s compact habit makes it appropriate for border fronts or shaded woodland gardens, though it is not typically recommended for container culture given its medium size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, tender leaves are susceptible to damage.
