Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, 'Chances Are' is a giant blue-green hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are the nearly round, heavily corrugated leaves with cordate bases, a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and a reputation for slug resistance.
In the Garden
'Chances Are' reaches a mature size of approximately 33 cm (13 in) in leaf length and 30.5 cm (12 in) in width, making it suitable for the middle to back of a border or as a specimen plant in partial to full shade. The blue-green foliage with flat margins pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color. Its large, cupped leaves create substantial visual mass in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The cultivar's noted slug resistance reduces the need for pest management, though deer may browse young foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
