Overview

Registered in 1985 by M. Soules, this giant variegated hosta originated from a cross between *H. sieboldiana* and *H.* 'Tokudama'. It is visually distinctive for its very large, heavily textured leaves with gray-green margins and a pronounced upper surface sheen, forming a substantial mound.

In the Garden

'Hosta' 'Champion' reaches a mature spread of 52 inches (132.1 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), with scapes rising to 24 inches (61 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast its broad, rounded foliage. Its giant size makes it unsuitable for containers but ideal as a specimen or groundcover in larger woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain even soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage young foliage, but the thick leaves of this cultivar offer moderate resistance; deer browsing is a potential concern in typical hosta-growing zones.
