Overview

Registered in 1971 by E. Fisher, 'Challenger' is a large, variegated hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of glossy, dark green leaf margins with a lighter center, creating a strong contrast on foliage that reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in length and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in width.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a substantial clump 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size and bold leaf pattern provide structure in woodland gardens or shaded foundation plantings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Challenger' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be required in areas where these pests are prevalent.
