Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Chalice of Gold' is a large, mound-forming cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Sea Prize' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its nearly round, deeply corrugated, and moderately cupped leaves that exhibit golden yellow margins surrounding a green center, combined with a slightly shiny upper surface and a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of approximately 42 inches (107 cm) and a height of 25 inches (64 cm), with scapes rising 27 to 31 inches (69 to 79 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for gold-margined hostas, and its substantial leaf substance provides good resistance to sun scald in brighter conditions. The moderate growth rate and mound-like habit make it suitable for mid-border positions, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, though the thick, corrugated leaves offer some natural resistance.
