Overview
Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Chain Lightning' is a small-sized cultivar notable for its reversed coloration: creamy white leaf centers are framed by dark green, slightly rippled margins. The leaves are cordate at the base, measure 4 inches (10.2 cm) long by 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) wide, and bear 6 to 8 pairs of veins; both leaf surfaces are dull. The plant forms a mound 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate.
In the Garden
'Chain Lightning' performs best in partial to light shade, typical for hostas with substantial white leaf areas, which are prone to scorch in full sun. At maturity, it forms a compact mound less than 2 feet across and under 1 foot tall, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or troughs. Its small stature pairs well with other diminutive perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*, and it is well suited to container culture.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; standard preventative measures may be necessary in affected gardens.
