Overview
Registered in 2005, 'Celtic Uplands' is a large, fast-growing hosta resulting from a cross between a *Hosta* 'Swoosh' seedling and *Hosta* 'John Wargo', with *Hosta yingeri* as the pollen parent. The cultivar is visually distinctive for its upright, vase-shaped habit, deep matte green leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins, and red petioles that extend into the lower half of the scape.
In the Garden
'Celtic Uplands' reaches a mature diameter of approximately 35 inches (88.9 cm) and a height of 22 inches (55.9 cm), with scapes rising 28 to 31 inches (71.1 to 78.7 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its upright form makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant. The broad, deeply corrugated leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its large size precludes most container applications.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the thick, corrugated foliage may still attract these pests in shaded garden settings.
