Overview
Registered in 2011 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Catherine' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with creamy yellow flames that extend into broad, flat white margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 5.9 inches (15.0 cm) long and 3.9 inches (9.9 cm) wide, are slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with eight vein pairs and a tapered base.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature diameter of 27.6 inches (70.1 cm) and height of 15.7 inches (39.9 cm), 'Catherine' forms an upright clump with a moderate growth rate. It is noted for both slug and sun resistance, making it suitable for sites that receive more light than typical hostas, though it performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with partial to dappled shade. Its compact size suits it for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture, and it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or small grasses.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slug resistant, monitor for deer browsing in areas where they are prevalent.
