Overview
Registered in 2002 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Zager's White Edge', 'Cathedral' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its unstable variegation: green leaves with creamy white margins and variable streaks of creamy white extending into the green center. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above and below, with flat, ovate blades measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) wide, supported by eight vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Cathedral' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its small stature makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Pair with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras to complement its variegated foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed.
