Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Carolingian' is a miniature cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its small, ovate green leaves with flat white margins, combined with white flowers—an uncommon pairing in miniature hostas.
In the Garden
'Carolingian' forms a compact mound 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) tall and 5 inches (12.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It thrives in partial to full shade, as typical for the genus, and is well suited to rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. Its small stature also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants might include other miniature shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or small ferns.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Carolingian' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
