Hosta ‘Carolina Blue’ is a registered cultivar () .

Year registered2000
Section classIII-2

Overview

Registered in 2000, this medium-sized hybrid results from crossing *Hosta* 'Halcyon' (pod parent) with *Hosta* 'Riptide' (pollen parent). The cultivar is distinguished by its blue-green foliage with a pronounced glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, a rounded leaf base, and flat margins.

In the Garden

'Carolina Blue' forms a dense, mounding clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the glaucous bloom on its leaves is most pronounced. The blue scapes rise 28 to 32 inches (71.1 to 81.3 cm) above the foliage. This cultivar pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, astilbes, and heucheras.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage; appropriate management may be required in areas where these pests are prevalent.
