Overview
Registered in 1971 by E. Fisher, this medium-sized cultivar originated as a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Golden Anniversary'. 'Carefree' is distinguished by its green leaves with gold margins, pale yellow leaf edges that show few undulations, and a compact, mounded form.
In the Garden
'Carefree' reaches approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its moderate size and restrained leaf undulations allow it to pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials without overwhelming them. It is not typically recommended for container cultivation due to its medium stature.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Carefree' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
