Overview

Registered in 1986 by E. Carder and the American Hosta Society, this medium-sized cultivar is a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Tokudama'. It is distinguished by its broad, cupped leaves of intense blue-green with a narrow, lighter margin, forming a dense, symmetrical mound.

In the Garden

'Carder Blue' performs best in partial to full shade, where its leaf color remains truest. At maturity, the clump reaches approximately 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height, with scapes rising up to 20 inches (50.8 cm). Its medium size and rounded habit make it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden, where it pairs well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many blue-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and may require protection in typical hosta-growing zones.
