Overview
Registered in 2001 by H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Captain Teach' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from *H. kikutii caput-avis*. Its most distinctive features are the very shiny, dark green leaf margins with a dull underside, combined with a lightly cupped, twisted, and moderately wavy blade that is ovate with a cordate base.
In the Garden
'Captain Teach' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its glossy foliage provides good textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The scapes, which emerge at a 45-degree angle, reach 25 to 28 inches (63.5 to 71.1 cm) and bear flowers noted for their quality.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the glossy leaves may attract both pests.
