Overview
Registered in 1980 by E. Minks, *Hosta* 'Capitol Dome' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Crested Reef' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Crinkle Cup' (pollen parent). The leaves are 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, featuring pale green undulated margins that give the foliage a distinctive, rippled appearance.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense, dome-shaped clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the variegated leaf margins remain most distinct. Suitable for woodland borders, shade gardens, and as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees, it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard hosta precautions apply: monitor for slugs and snails, and protect from deer where these are present. Division every three to four years in spring or autumn helps maintain vigor.
