Overview
Registered in 1998 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Candy Hearts' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. nakaiana*. It is visually distinguished by its cordate, medium blue-green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside, forming a dense, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Candy Hearts' performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, where its blue-green foliage retains its color. At maturity, it reaches approximately 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and spreads to 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in woodland gardens. Its moderate growth rate and compact mound form pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; it is not typically recommended for container cultivation due to its medium size.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may cause damage, the slightly rippled leaf margins offer some resistance compared to smoother-leaved cultivars.
