Overview
Registered in 1995 by Paul Banyai and introduced by Ed Elslager, *Hosta* 'Candy Cane' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its dark green leaves with a wide, yellow-gold margin that is slightly rippled, and its compact, fast-growing mound habit.
In the Garden
'Candy Cane' forms a dense mound 7 inches (17.8 cm) tall and 14 inches (35.6 cm) wide, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants include small ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Tiarella* in shaded woodland settings.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Candy Cane' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
