Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, 'Canadian Blue' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, slightly rippled margins, and moderate corrugation.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense, fast-growing mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 40 inches (101.6 cm) wide. It thrives in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom is best preserved. Its substantial size and blue foliage make it suitable for mid-border placement or as a specimen in shade gardens, pairing well with ferns, heucheras, or other fine-textured perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though monitoring is advisable in damp conditions. Deer may browse young foliage.
