Overview
Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster (AHS), this large hosta cultivar produces blue-green leaves with golden yellow flat margins and heavy corrugation. The nearly round, moderately cupped leaves display a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and reach 10.25 inches in length with 12 to 14 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Buttercup' forms a mound 22 inches high and 42 inches in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, where the gold margins remain most vivid. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders alongside ferns, astilbes, or other large hostas.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable for this cultivar, as for most hostas.
