Overview
Registered in 2014 from unknown parentage, 'Buttercup Baby' is a miniature hosta distinguished by its small, bright yellow leaves with green margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 2 inches (5.1 cm) long and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) wide, feature yellow flat margins, five vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside with a moderately flat profile and rounded base.
In the Garden
'Buttercup Baby' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 3 inches (7.6 cm) in height and 13 inches (33.0 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its miniature size makes it well-suited for troughs, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border. Pair with small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas for scale; it also thrives in containers where its diminutive proportions can be appreciated up close.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Buttercup Baby' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and use barriers or repellents as needed.
