Overview

Registered in 1982 by K. Vaughn, this medium-sized hosta is distinguished by its bright butter-yellow leaf margins, which contrast with a green leaf center. The cultivar results from a cross of two Vaughn seedlings and produces leaves measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide, with 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Butter Yellow' reaches a mature spread of 24 inches (61.0 cm) and a height of 8 inches (20.3 cm), with scapes extending up to 27 inches (68.6 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded rock gardens. Companion plants may include ferns, heucheras, or shade-tolerant groundcovers.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
