Overview
Registered in 1986 by A. Summers and the American Hosta Society, 'Butter Rim' is a small hosta derived from a *H. sieboldii* parent. It is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with wide, irregular gold margins and moderate undulation along the leaf edges.
In the Garden
'Butter Rim' reaches a mature diameter of 33 inches (83.8 cm) and a height of 13 inches (33.0 cm), with scapes rising to 35 inches (88.9 cm). It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture due to its compact size. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or low-growing groundcovers that complement its gold-margined foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
