Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Bunchoko' is a small-sized cultivar originating as a sport. It is visually distinctive for its medium green, ovate leaves with dull surfaces on both sides and narrow, white, slightly rippled margins that measure 0.25 to 0.5 inches (0.6 to 1.3 cm) wide. The leaf blade is 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) long and 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with six vein pairs and a rounded base. The plant forms a mound-like habit, reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter. Scapes rise to 28 inches (71.1 cm) and are medium green. An editor's note indicates the taxon was originally treated as a species forma by Maekawa and later reduced to cultivar status by Schmid in 1991.

In the Garden

'Bunchoko' is suited for partial to dappled shade, typical of most hosta-growing zones. Its small, mound-like form makes it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, heucheras, and small woodland perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed.
