Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' registered in 2000, 'Buckeye' is a giant hosta distinguished by its large, heavily textured green leaves with wide golden yellow margins. The substantial leaf margins, approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, provide strong contrast against the darker green centers, making this cultivar visually prominent in the landscape.
In the Garden
'Buckeye' reaches a mature spread of 40 inches (101.6 cm) and a height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), forming a dense, fast-growing mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain bright without scorching. This large specimen works well as a focal point in shaded borders or woodland gardens, and pairs effectively with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it unsuitable for containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures as needed. 'Buckeye' is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
