Overview
Registered in 2009 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Bubbling Spring' is a large variegated cultivar distinguished by its intensely domed, deeply folded leaves that form a neat, mound-like clump. The nearly round, dark green leaves have flat margins and a slightly shiny to very shiny upper surface, with 13 to 14 pairs of veins and a cordate base; the overall effect suggests bubbles rising to the surface of a spring.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches approximately 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 46 inches (116.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate and a compact, mound-like habit. It performs best in partial to full shade and is well-suited for woodland gardens, shade borders, or as a specimen plant. Its substantial, corrugated foliage pairs effectively with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage can occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
