Overview

Registered in 2007, 'Brutus' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sea Drift' and *H. venusta*. It is visually distinctive for its immense, nearly round blue-green leaves that arise upright from the crown and remain remarkably flat, with heavily rippled, dark green margins and a very shiny upper surface.

In the Garden

'Brutus' reaches a mature spread of 165 cm (65 in) and a height of 91 cm (36 in), making it suitable for use as a bold specimen or focal point in partial to full shade. Its moderate growth rate and upright habit allow it to integrate well with other shade perennials such as ferns, astilbes, and larger-leaved woodland plants. The tall scapes, reaching 122 to 127 cm (48–50 in), bear medium purple flowers that surround the stem, adding late-season interest.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thick, corrugated leaves show moderate resistance to slugs, though monitoring may be necessary in damp conditions. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
