Overview

Registered in 1987 by D. Stone and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Brooke' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its cordate leaves with green-gray margins and a contrasting lighter center, supported by a low, mounding habit.

In the Garden

'Brooke' forms a compact clump reaching 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegation remains stable, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its moderate size also allows for use in large containers or woodland garden settings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Brooke' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas with high pest pressure.
