Overview

Registered in 2010, *Hosta* 'Brick Back' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Herbie Rocks' as the pod parent and an unnamed seedling as the pollen parent. Its most distinctive features are the long, strappy, low-arching leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a very shiny upper surface, combined with a dull underside.

In the Garden

This slow-growing, rhizomatous hosta reaches a mature diameter of 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 16 inches (40.6 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in partially shaded to shaded sites. The lance-shaped leaves, measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide with 6 to 8 vein pairs, have a tapered base and are moderately flat with a light wavy margin. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials in typical hosta-growing zones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While not noted as exceptionally resistant, standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
