Overview

Registered in 2012 as a seedling of *Hosta* 'sdlg PDN 99-094', 'Branching Out' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its branched flower scapes—a relatively uncommon trait among hostas. The foliage presents dark green, slightly rippled margins with a very shiny surface on both sides, forming a broadly ovate leaf with a cordate base and light waviness.

In the Garden

'Branching Out' forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height, making it suitable for mid-border or groundcover applications in partial to full shade. Its 9-inch (22.9 cm) long by 6-inch (15.2 cm) wide leaves provide substantial texture, and the 28- to 32-inch (71.1 to 81.3 cm) green scapes bearing branched flower clusters add vertical interest. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials in typical hosta-growing zones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly on the glossy foliage.
