Overview

Registered in 1999, 'Boundary Waters' is a large hosta of unknown parentage distinguished by its broad, cordate leaves of medium blue-green with a pronounced glaucous bloom on both surfaces. The leaves are nearly as wide as they are long, each measuring 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) in both dimensions, with 12 to 13 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous coating remains intact. Green scapes rise 19 to 22 inches (48.3 to 55.9 cm) above the foliage. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or as part of a mixed shade border; companion plants should be chosen to contrast with the blue-green foliage, such as golden-leaved ferns or white-flowered impatiens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most blue-leaved hostas, 'Boundary Waters' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
