Overview

Registered in 1999 by P. Ruh, 'Borsch 1' is a large, upright hosta of unknown parentage. Its variegated foliage features light green, slightly rippled leaf margins with a dull upper surface and slightly shiny underside, borne on cordate leaf bases.

In the Garden

With a mature spread of 33 inches (83.8 cm) and height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), 'Borsch 1' suits mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its moderate growth rate and upright habit make it compatible with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials; it is not typically recommended for containers due to its large size.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry spells. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
