Overview
Registered in 1980 by E. Minks, this medium-sized hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *H.* 'Tokudama' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Dear Heart' (pollen parent). 'Bon Voyage' is visually distinctive for its gray-green leaves with undulated margins and variegated coloration, forming a compact mound 15 inches (38.1 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
'Bon Voyage' performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage maintains color without scorching. At maturity, the plant spreads approximately two feet wide, making it suitable for the middle to front of shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as an accent among ferns and other shade perennials. Its moderate size also allows for container cultivation in shaded patio settings. The 32-inch (81.3 cm) scapes bear lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
