Overview
Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Bombs Bursting in Air' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar bred from *H.* 'One Man's Treasure' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Strawberry Delight' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its vase-shaped habit, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, and notably deep red-spotted petioles that contrast with the foliage.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright, fast-growing clump reaching approximately 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size suits placement in mixed borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds. The dark red-brown scapes, rising 10 to 16 inches (25.4 to 40.6 cm), bear flowers that complement the foliage; companion plants with contrasting leaf shapes or colors, such as ferns or heucheras, work well alongside it.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
